Did immigration issues drive us to Brexit? What is the word on the streets right now?

Despite that France removed the Airport Transit Visa requirement for Indian nationals, the number of overall applications for ATVs has increased by 5.6% from 2017 to 2018. The rejection rate has also slightly increased from 14.1% to 14.8%, with Belgium and Portugal leading the list for highest share of rejected applications.

Top Schengen Countries with the Highest Airport Transit Visa Applications in 2018

France, Germany and the Netherlands are the main recipients of ATV applications for yet another year, mainly because their airports are a connecting route between many third-countries.

Applications for an Airport Visa to transit France saw an increase from 1,723 to 2,167 despite that in July last year the country abolished the visa requirement for Indians, which is the main source of France ATV applications.

The statistics of the few past years show that the number of applications has marked a slight increase for the first time in years. Until last year, the number of applications for an ATV visa had been decreasing. While in 2015 there were 8,146 Airport Transit Visa Applications received in total by the Schengen countries, in 2016 the number fell to 7,255, and in 2017 the number slightly decreased again to 5,026.

Aside France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain, every other Schengen country received less than 100 applications. Moreover, the following Schengen countries received no Airport Transit Visa applications in 2018:

  • Estonia
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Latvia
  • Lithuania
  • Malta
  • Norway
  • Slovenia
